Mark A. Anderson, Shareholder

March 14, 1949 – November 22, 2019

Our colleague, friend, and guide

May 1, 1994 – November 22, 2019

Mark’s passion for life, along with this quick wit and boundless wisdom, was a centerpiece of our Firm for over 25 years.  A member of the Bois Forte Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and the vast and remarkable Anderson family, Mark acquired a national reputation for his work in the areas of Indian tribal authority and rights, natural resources protection and development, and land tenure in Indian Country. Mark received his BA from Gustavus Adolphus College and his JD from the University of Minnesota.  For two decades, Mark advised and represented the United States Department of the Interior at the Office of the Solicitor, first in Washington, D.C. and then back in Minnesota, on a wide a variety of Indian natural resources issues, tribal sovereignty matters, and many other issues under the purview of the Interior Department.  In 1994, Mark joined the Firm and worked tirelessly for his and many other Tribes on matters ranging from daily governance issues to enormously complex business and real estate transactions.

Marks vast intellect and clarity of thought were only exceeded by his humility, ethos, and sense of humor.  He never sought the spotlight, but the light naturally shown on him because of who he was.  Mark’s life-long work for Indian Country will stand as an ongoing tribute to his skill, brilliance, and dedication to his Band and to Indian people throughout the Country.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him as well as by those who benefited from his incredible legal talent.
